New Trees one is broken

I finally received my order (this coming monday will be 2 weeks since I placed the order) for the pines, rain tree, jap larch. These are small trees, all looked good (for size and cost) but they "make the trees to fit the shipping box" instead of using a box that fit the trees! the box was about 8" too short. 2 of the pines were folded over and one of the larch was folded way over, so far it had broken the trunk. It is not all the way into, I could brake it off and it would be the same size the other one. Since it was still attached I used some small wire, started about an inch below the break and went way past the break. Which pulled the trunk back and helped to strighten the top as it was cruved from being in the box. It may strighten up without the wire, I just thought it would help get the break some strength. Is there anything I should be on the break? Will it heal? would it be better to cut it off at the break? I will be in contact with the nursey that I ordered it from about the shipping.
thanks,
Michael

I have only had one tree like that, it was bent well over, but on inspection it had enough contact with the bark at the back, so i straitened it up and put tape around it, i then got in touch with the seller he simply sent another tree, as the broken tree is still alive that gave me 2 of them.
That was over two years ago, and it is still growing.
You have to remember that the more experienced guys can split trunks and do all sort of things with them. Cheers.

Trees are bent over like that in the boxes so you can save money on the shipping. Your trees should be fine.

Thanks for the info. I think the tree will heal, I thought about the tape but figured it would come off when I water. If I did cut it at the break it would be ok too. The two pines were bent and have not strightened up yet (well it has been just one day) I think it may be just the point of it. They did not save me any shipping, I felt it was high to begin with. I do plan to tell them about the break and let them talk. If they send another tree at n/c, they have a new customer. If not, I am still pleased with what I got, will plant and Smile!
Thanks,
ML

Thumbs up

When i spoke about tape i forgot to say it was sellotape i used, i don't know if this made a diff. from electric tape or not. As far as the watering, that should not bother it, as i presume? we are speaking about the apex/top of the tree.
The thing is, if it was a break don't mess with it, leave the tape for at least a year for the tree to heal. With clear tape you can see what is going on. One reason i did not use wire was, i did not want the wound to move about or it would have never healed, that is why when you get a break on a leg or arm it is in plaster for weeks. Cheers.

When I mentioned shipping, I meant that if the trees were not bent over, then a bigger box would have to be used and the cost would be more than what you paid.

Unhappy

I am not sure how you guys work the price out, but over here it goes by weight, a box 2in taller would not cost anymore, to me this is just a way of cutting costs by a few cents.
I have purchased tree's off ebay, they stated the postage would be £6 UK, but when it arrived the ticket stated it only cost £4 UK, so where the hell did the other £2 UK go to? I ain't going into this, but i hate when that happens. Cheers.

I am sorry, but trees bent to fit into a certain box is unacceptable, and a broken tree should be sent directly back for full refund (including shipping). Moreover I would never purchase from this vendor again. While a new apex can be developed, that is not what you paid for. If the tree is damaged in shipping you should put in a claim against the carrying company.

I have purchased a few trees that were sent to me like that and I assumed, even took as a fact, that it was done to save on shipping a bigger box. I didn't have a problem with this because the trees were young and could take it. I never had one broken before. I bought an oak from Brent and it was packaged the same way. JL, are you saying I shouldn't buy from Brent any more?

My feelings exactly. That is outrageous and unacceptable. One does not bend a tree to ship it and I would certainly place it on the Bonsai Nursery Feedback forum as to where you purchased it as a negative feedback. Would you accept any other bent over and broken item so as to fit in a box? I would think not! Get a full refund and do not accept it. It's not your job to try and nurse it back to health simply because they were too lazy to package it right.
File a complaint and get your money back. I've never heard of any thing so insane except as to free trees from the Arboretum Society but they are bare rooted and somewhat accepted in some ways. Even then...it has never happened to me from them! Bottom line.....there is no such thing as bending a tree to fit it into a box as for shipping and it should not be accepted. If this is indeed what they did by all means place their name in the proper forum so as to make others here aware of them. Totally unacceptable.
