My effort at bonsai...comments?

My tree in a pot I bought a year ago. It's a 14" Ming Aralia (not sure of the variety. If you know please tell us). It's a fun tree to grow. I'd like to propagate using wood cuttings but where should I cut it that wouldn't negatively impact it's present and future form? Any advice on propagation? Should I put the cutting in the same pot with some root hormone or should I put it in just water to establish it's own root system?

I am not a big fan of ming aralia, but I do like the picture in silhoutte. Looks like an enjoyable night of fishing.
