Yellow leaves...help!

I have same problem with my chinese elm bought, It consistently loses about 10-20 or so leaves a day, they all get yellow on the tip and extends gradually (some develop dark green or black spots on the tip are as well). It affects leaves off all sizes and ages randomly.

I keep it indoors beside the window that I keep open just for a few minuets a day.

It has about 3 hours of direct sun (not always as in the UK) through the glass a day but it never gets to hot.

I have fed it liquid fertiliser weekly during spring.

I water it may be to often, as I don`t let the soil surface dry completely before I water it again. Could this be the problem?.

I am doing weekly sprays with antifungal.

It´s my first baby. Any advise?

Arrow Welcome

Alvaro,

Welcome to the site! Although a Chinese Elm can be considered "Evergreen" you should put it out from late spring to early fall, so that it will thrive.

My first impression is that you are over-watering your tree. You would be surprised at how many trees die from over/under watering. Your tree should never be on a schedule for watering. It should always be watered on an as needed basis.

Water when the soil is almost dry about an inch down around the trunk. Then water your tree evenly until the water starts to come out from the bottom of the pot. Repeat only when needed.

Here is a symptom sheet from out site, it can be used as a check list...
General first alert list: Frequent care mistakes - vBadvanced Dynamics

Let's clear up the watering then see what problems are left? Good luck!

Keep us updated...

Hi Alvaro, you should get this tree outside straight away because they dont do too well inside.
This tree also has symptoms of overwatering, leave it to dry out properly before watering again. When you do water dont pour the water over the leaves, pour it directly onto the soil. cheers Phil G.

Thanks

Thanks for your wise advise. I´m already working on the watering issue.
As suggested I think is a good idea to take it outside, unfortunately I live in a a flat, so it is not possible.

I´ll keep you informed.

Alvaro

I read in a book on how a guy who also lived in a flat made himself a small wooden shelf that attached to his windowsill. He then attached his bonsai pots with wire to the shelf so the pots would not get blown off in high winds. cheers Phil G.
