Hiya! This is a new tree from a local nursery it was in with a dozen or so similar trees some with the tag 'Bahama' or 'Barbados Cherry'.
1) Is this the proper ID? scientific name? 2) It has little "hairs" on each leaf (3rd photo) is this natural? a sign of fungus or pest? or just a greenhouse condition that will go away with time in a new environment? 3) Are those little buds in the 4th photo new growth, flower buds, cherries? 4)Lotsa moss (yay! 'cuz Im luckless growing it from spores). Is that tan fuzzy stuff on the trunk moss?...do you see anything in the dirt to eradicate? Thankfully I havn't seen any gnats or bugs from this pot. 5) Style advice-please offer- I know it has a broken branch (middle of the first picture)but it is still rather well attached and I like the tree's form. Plus it was only 5 bucks. I'm trying to attach the photos as thumbnails, forgive me if they aren't. Last edited by mage973; 03-23-2011 at 05:47 PM.. Reason: deails |

Mage, the bark does look like that of Malphigia, commonly known as "Barbados cherry." There are several species in cultivation; the leaf fits what I've seen of one of them.
Yes, I think those are flower buds in that one picture. This tree is much too small/young to style, unless you want a super-mini mame! Best to grow it on for several years. That will give you a chance to get to know the species at the same time.
