I'm happy to read that your Elm is on the road to recovery. From what you are stating it definitely seems that way.
My experience with them is limited as far as yellowing leaves goes. I have found that if the leaves are yellow = overwatering.
Bottom-line, it's all trial and error, and if we come out of the experience having learned something from it all the better. Especially if the tree has survived.
By the way, did you check the roots for root rot? You don't want to have to contend with that next.

P.S. By the way, I recently asked one of our senior members, Michel, to put his checklist in our articles. It is very useful in diagnosing problems when going through the process of elimination. We've had it on all of our sites and it is very handy.
