It is based on the theory that the holes will cause the air to 'Air prune' the roots, creating a very fibrous root system, there are very large containers available on the commercial side of tree production that are an Australian invention that do the same thing, Hillier tree nurseries use them a lot, they gave me one, but I didn't have anything big enough that needed a fibrous root system, so I just put a large Taxus I dug up in it lmao.
